Robbie on Rangers and Deadline Day

31 January 2023

The manager doesn’t anticipate a great deal of activity at Tynecastle this deadline day, and emphasised his happiness with the current quality at his disposal within the dressing room.

“Yeah, there’s one or two we’re looking at,” he told the media ahead of the Rangers match.

“That said, we are late in the window. We’re still trying, but it’s difficult. I’m definitely happy with what we’ve got right now – which is a really good squad. I’d like to add one more but the key thing, if we do get one, they have to be at a level where they’re going to improve the squad rather than coming in as a number.

“We know what we’re doing. We know what we’re doing in the summer window already, and we have the beginnings of an idea of how next January will look as well. It’s part of being at a football club that you have to plan long-term.”

Hearts begin a double game week tomorrow night when they welcome Michael Beale’s Rangers to Gorgie in cinch Premiership action.

The two sides are set to lock horns at Tynecastle for the second time this season, but the first since Rangers appointed Beale as manager. A new system and style of play have been implemented by the new Gers boss, but Robbie reckons the Jambos have a good opportunity to claim all three points.

“They play a slightly different way; a touch narrower with more possession through the middle,” he said. “It’s the same players that are there because they’ve not made too many changes. We have a great opportunity: it’s Tynecastle under the lights and we’re going into it trying to win.

“It’s always a difficult game when either of the Old Firm come through to Edinburgh but we’ve got a good group here that’s capable of putting on a show and winning the game.”
