Match Report: Hearts 2-0 Ross County

15 March 2025

Hearts moved back into the top six, as strikes in both halves from Elton Kabangu and Jorge Grant earned three Premiership points at Tynecastle.

In our final match before the international break, the Belgian notched his eighth of the season after a delightful pass from Beni Baningime in the build up.

Substitute Grant added the extra in the final moments of regular time, sliding in to meet Musa's cross at the near post to secure victory.

Neil Critchley made a single change to the side that beat Dundee in the Scottish Cup last Friday, James Wilson coming in for Kenneth Vargas as the Jambos freshened things up.

It wasn't an explosive start to proceedings in Gorgie, with possession taking precedence as both sides sought to gain control of the game.

Kieran Phillips hammered an inviting ball across the face of goal following a County counter on 15 minutes, but Beni Baningime did well to get across and block Connor Randall's resulting effort.

Blair Spittal drove forward from midfield for the Jambos, but his spectacular attempt from the edge of the box went high and wide as the hunt for the opening goal continued.

The decisive opener finally arrived after 26 minutes, and what a superb bit of play it was. In the midst of a packed goalmouth, Baningime cut the County defence open with a glorious reverse ball.

Elton Kabangu wasted no time in latching on, and expertly dispatched a low drive through the legs of Jordan Amissah from close range to make it 1-0 to the boys in maroon.

The Jambos almost had a quickfire second moments later as Kabangu's expertly flicked header to Lawrence Shankland was slid through to James Wilson, with the young forward's angled strike held by Amissah.

HT: Heart of Midlothian 1-0 Ross County

Ross County emerged for the second 45 with more zest, Kieran Phillips seeing a dig from 25-yards flash just wide of Craig Gordon's post after a nice turn on the edge of the Hearts box.

Critchley's side kept at it with a promising delivery by Shankland from the right headed wide by Kabangu - the referee's flag signaling offside against the Belgian shortly after.

Another glorious chance came on 68 minutes when Shankland did so well to keep a loose ball alive near the touchline. The skipper laid into the path of Adam Forrester, who's first-time cross picked out Kabangu - the resulting effort going just over the bar.

Craig Gordon had to be alert after 77 minutes as former Jambo ripped a daisy cutter towards him from distance, with the Scotland 'keeper down quickly to halt it's advances.

Substitutes Alan Forrest and Musa combined, with the winger cutting back for the Gambian's first time effort - Jordan Amissah sticking out a strong hand to deny Hearts two minutes from time.

Musa was at the heart of events for the second goal in the final embers of regular time, doing well to cross down the right as Jorge Grant slid in at the near post to sign off a good afternoon's work for the men in maroon.
