Match Report: Hearts Women 1-0 Hibernian Women

08 December 2024

Georgia Timms second-half strike sent Hearts through to the last 16 of the Women’s Scottish Cup with a 1-0 victory in the Edinburgh Derby against Hibernian at Oriam on Sunday.

Eva Olid made one change from the previous 2-0 league victory against Aberdeen, with Esther Morgan coming in to replace Bayley Hutchison.

The Jambos had an early chance to open the scoring in the second minute. Striker Timms slipped Joely Andrews through on goal, but her low effort was comfortable in the end for Erin Clachers in goal for Hibernian.

With 20 minutes played, Hibs skipper Rachael Boyle whipped in a dangerous corner and Kathleen McGovern got up high to meet it. Her header sailed over the crossbar.

Hibs forward Abbie Ferguson drove down the wing, before cutting inside and got a shot off, although it was easy for Parker-Smith to claim.

Hibs had another good chance to open the scoring. Following a slip in midfield, captain Rachael Boyle played a smart pass to Michaela McAlonie in the box. The attacker’s effort went well wide of the target.

On 40 minutes, Tegan Bowie galloped down the left wing and played a dangerous low ball into the box which eluded the Hearts defence, but failed to reach a Hibs jersey.

Hearts had another opportunity to go ahead just before the break. Jessica Husband took on a Hibs defender before cutting inside and hitting a left footed strike, which was routine for Clachers in goal.

Half-time: Hearts 0-0 Hibernian

The Jambos would soon make their pressure count early into the second half.

In the 53rd minute, Jackie Richards floated a ball over the top to find Georgia Timms, who took a great touch before poking the ball past Clachers into the bottom right corner to take the lead in the Edinburgh Derby.

The goal injected some much needed energy into the Jambos. Minutes later, Timms drove down the right before playing a ball to Elizabeth Waldie at the edge of the box, whose effort curled over the crossbar.

Hibs looked to get back level in the 60th minute. Parker-Smith was forced into making a good stop following Tegan Bowie’s strike from outside the area, which was tipped out for a corner.

Hearts would have the chance to put the game to bed with 15 minutes to go. Referee Lewis Hogarth awarded a penalty after Kirsten Reilly chopped down Eilidh Shore in the box.

Lisa Robertson was denied by Clachan from the penalty spot after the Hibs goalkeeper dived well to her left hand side to make the save.

In the closing stages of the game, The Jambos were resolute defensively to shut out Hibs and deny the possibility of a late comeback.

Deep into injury time, Hibs subsitute Eilidh Adams was played in behind the Hearts defence. Defender Erin Husband made a brilliant challenge to clear the ball away from danger and protect the lead for her side as the women in maroon progressed to Monday night's draw.
