Match Report: Hibs 2-1 Hearts

02 March 2025

Hearts were defeated 2-1 by Hibs in the third Edinburgh derby of the season at Easter Road this afternoon.

An early strike from Martin Boyle was quickly cancelled out courtesy of a Jorge Grant screamer, but Jack Iredale's second half stunner saw the men in maroon leave Leith empty-handed.

Neil Critchley made two changes to the side that beat St. Mirren midweek; Jorge Grant and Blair Spittal coming in to replace Sander Kartum and Calem Nieuwenhof in the middle of the park.

Amidst a cauldron of noise at Easter Road, it was the Jambos that carved out the first chance of the match. Shankland drove through the Hibs line from deep, his effort forcing a block from Jordan Smith in the hosts' goal.

Hibs claimed the lead after seven minutes; Martin Boyle beating Gerald Taylor in a footrace down the right. From a tight angle, he curled the ball beyond the reach of Gordon to make it 1-0.

The Jambos response was emphatic. Shankland played an awkward ball in behind the Hibs defence. A poor clearance from Rocky Bushiri saw the ball fall as far as Jorge Grant.

With a touch of gold, Grant sent a glorious volley into the net from 20-yards out to send the Dunbar End into raptures.

Hearts enjoyed the lion's share of possession for the next 20 minutes, without really creating anything. The next chance came from a slack pass by Warren O'Hora: allowing Kabangu to nip inside ahead of Bushiri.

Another poor clearance from the Hibs defender saw the ball cannon back to a waiting Shankland. Under pressure, his resulting header could only ripple the side netting as Hibs survived a scare.

The Jambos had the ball in the net minutes later as Elton Kabangu hoovered up a splitting pass from Beni Baningime. The Belgian raced forward and slotted into the far corner, with the flag up for offside to deny him.

Hibs went on the attack in response, with Nicky Cadden dragging a decent cross just wide of goal as Martin Boyle moved to intercept.

HT: Hibernian 1-1 Heart of Midlothian

Hearts registered a half-chance within five minutes of the restart at Easter Road. Blair Spittal's corner was cleared as far as James Penrice on the edge of the box, with the full-back's volley veering wide of the top corner.

It was Hearts' turn to survive a fright moments later as Hibs screamed for a penalty. Gerald Taylor and Nicky Cadden grappled in the box, but John Beaton waved away Hibee claims as Cadden went down.

Both teams were at it hammer and tong; a clearance from Grant veered into the path of a waiting Nathan Moriah-Welsh from 25-yards, his low drive sneaking past Gordon's post.

Hibs started to shade possession, with two big chances off the back of that; Chris Cadden seeing a vicious volley into Gordon's gloves, before Boyle dragged a good opportunity wide from the corner.

The hosts then took the lead after 74 minutes through Jack Iredale. Chris Cadden's cross was cleared into the path of Iredale on the edge of the box. He sent a dipping effort towards goal, which beat Gordon to make it 2-1 to Hibs.

Hearts couldn't find a way through in the closing stages of the game, and returned to Gorgie empty-handed.
