McCart makes Jambos move

03 January 2025

Heart of Midlothian is pleased to confirm the permanent signing of defender Jamie McCart from Rotherham United.

The centre back, a double cup winner with St Johnstone, has joined the Jambos from the Millers for an undisclosed fee, on a deal until 2029.

27-year-old Jamie, who boasts a wealth of experience playing both sides of the border, came through the youth system at Celtic, making his senior debut in August 2016.

Loan spells at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, St Mirren and Alloa Athletic followed before he signed a permanent deal with the Caley Jags in 2018.

Two years later he made the move to McDiarmid Park and was an integral part in the St Johnstone team that made history by beating Livingston and Hibs in the League Cup and Scottish Cup finals respectively to clinch the double.

In 2022 Jamie signed for Rotherham and would spend the second half of the 22/23 campaign on loan at Leyton Orient, where he helped them to the League Two title.

The following season was spent on loan at Barnsley, and Jamie played his part as the Tykes clinched a League One play-off spot.

A near ever-present for Rotherham this season, Jamie now swaps the New York Stadium for Tynecastle Park.

Speaking about the signing to the Official Hearts Website, Head Coach Neil Critchley said; “It’s probably no secret that due to injuries sustained at the heart of our defence we were looking to strengthen in this position. We are delighted that we’ve got Jamie signed so early in the window.

'He is someone I'm aware of from his time at Rotherham and Barnsley and added to his SPFL experience we feel we are recruiting Jamie at a good stage of his career.

"Jamie already knows a lot about Hearts and has shown a real appetite to come and join us. We are confident his presence and leadership will help to improve us both in the short and long term”
