Match Report: Hearts 5-1 Motherwell
22 October 2023Hearts Women made it back to back wins with a convincing 5-1 victory over Motherwell at Oriam on Sunday afternoon.
Eva Olid made two changes to the side that defeated Spartans last week. Emma Brownlie hadn’t recovered from concussion and was replaced at right back by Jenna Penman, meanwhile further forward, Aimee Anderson replaced Danni Findlay.
The Jambos have been scoring goals for fun this season and they were ahead after just ten minutes, thanks to Katie Lockwood. She raced on to the end of Esther Morgan’s through ball down the left and made no mistake as she lifted the ball past the onrushing Emily Mutch and into the empty net.
There wasn’t much between the sides in the early exchanges, but the Jam Tarts were two ahead just two minutes later. Lockwood this time turned provider and when her corner from the right wasn’t properly dealt with by Well and Carly Girasoli was on hand to send a looping header into the back of the net and double Hearts’ advantage.
The third goal should’ve arrived on 15 minutes as Motherwell lost possession inside their own box and Sade Adamolekun’s effort had Mutch rooted to the spot, but the post came to the visitors’ rescue.
With the game only 18 minutes old, the third goal of the afternoon arrived and this time it was for the visitors. Hearts thought they had cleared their lines but Amy Anderson’s volley from 25-yards brought Motherwell back into the game.
Adamolekun again came close five minutes later, but from Timms’ low cross, her effort was magnificently pushed onto the crossbar by Mutch.
Hearts restored their two-goal cushion on the half hour mark. Jenna Penman made ground down the right and her low strike sneaked under Mutch and into the bottom corner.
Into the second half and there were far fewer opportunities of note. Hearts continued to dominate possession, but Motherwell were looking a little more resolute than they were in the first half.
The game had gone a little flat in truth, but the fourth Hearts goal arrived 18 minutes from time. A smart run in behind from Lockwood saw her picked out by the intelligent Adamolekun and for the second time, she stayed composed to beat Mutch.
That goal, along with some substitutions gave Hearts a little bit of fresh impetus and Eilidh Davies had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds before adding goal number five.
It was unselfish play from Lockwood, who got to the byline before unselfishly squaring the ball for Davies to finish from close range after 79 minutes.
That was the end of the scoring as Hearts controlled the final ten minutes to record an impressive victory.
