Match Report: Hearts v Leyton Orient

13 July 2024

Hearts continued preparations for the 25/25 campaign with a pre-season run out against Leyton Orient, with the Londoners winning 2-1.

Liam Boyce notched an early opener, but Leyton scored two without reply to sign off a win.

In the first ever meeting between the two sides, both clubs paid tribute prior to the match to members of their respective 1914/15 side who went to the battlefields of France and, tragically, never returned.

Steven Naismith handed maiden maroon run outs to three new players from the start, with Musa Drammeh, Daniel Oyegoke, and Blair Spittal handed starting berths.

Hearts enjoyed the best of the opening stanza, with Kye Rowles drilling a thumping header past the Orient goal just five minutes in, courtesy of a delightful dead ball cross from the returning Barrie McKay.

This opening pressure soon bore fruit, with the Jambos racing into the lead after nine minutes, Liam Boyce capitalising on a slack pass from Ashby-Hammond in goal, sweeping in to blast home.

Proceedings eventually settled into a rhythm, but Leyton Orient got the game back on level terms after 24 minutes. Hearts defended an Orient attack, allowing Jordan Brown to rise at the resulting corner to nod past Craig Gordon.

Hearts kept plugging away but chances were few and far between as the half drew to a close. A McKay ball was cleared as far as Musa on the edge of the Orient box, but the Spaniard’s effort was high and wide.

HT: Heart of Midlothian 1-1 Leyton Orient

It was a challenging start to the second 45 as Orient raced into an early lead. Substitute Ryan Fulton initially did well to push away Agyei's shot but Jaiyesimi slammed home on the rebound to make it 2-1 in favour of the Londoners.

Fulton was again called into action after 56 minutes when he produced a fine stretching save to tip a dangerous Darren Pratley header away from danger.

As time went on, Alan Forrest slid into the box and rippled the side netting, just not qute able to get his angle right on the shot.

Hearts couldn’t find a way back in and now look ahead to Wednesday’s visit of Tottenham Hotspur
