Neil: All focus is on Saturday

15 October 2024

Neil Critchley gave his first Hearts TV interview as Head Coach of Heart of Midlothian.

The Englishman touched on various topics in a wide-ranging conversation, including how he wants his Hearts side to connect and identify with the support.

“I’m super excited. I know the enormity of this football club from just being here for the last few days,” he told Hearts TV.

“I've had a fantastic welcome from the people here and, I thank Ann, Andrew and Graeme for giving me the opportunity. I can't wait to get started.

“It's been a whirlwind the last 48 hours, to be honest. Meeting a lot of people yesterday, being shown around. It was nice to be on the grass this morning which is my natural domain. I liked getting to see the players train and I’m enthusiastic about what I saw.”

Although delighted, and excited, for the future – the Hearts boss remains fully grounded and aiming for a simple objective; getting a vital first league win of the season under the belt when St. Mirren visit Gorgie on Saturday.

“We're working towards a game on Saturday against St Mirren, and that's our immediate focus,” said Neil.

“I’ve watched every game so far this season to try and build up a picture of where we're at, what we're good at, as well as what we need to improve.

“We'll do our very best to, control some of the things that we have control over that will hopefully give us a positive result on Saturday.”

And finally, Neil identified the key values he expects from his new team as he looks to get the Jambos up and running.

“One that gives everything. One that’s hard working. We want to attack with the ball, without the ball, and we want to be a team that nobody wants to play,” he explained.

“We don't want it to be a good experience when the opposition see our name on the fixture list every week.

“There are certain traits that we want to instil into our team, because we represent the supporters. From being in the city and around this area, it's quite clear that certain values need to be replicated in the team we see on the pitch.”
