Steinwender settling into Scottish football

28 March 2025

Michael Steinwender admits he’s beginning to settle into the frantic nature of Scottish football, in particular, the amount of headers he’s now having to make.

The centre back was thrown in at the deep end following injuries to Frankie Kent, Craig Halkett and Stephen Kingsley and having initially settled in alongside Jamie McCart, the latter’s injury saw him paired with the returning Lewis Neilson.

Steinwender took the opportunity to visit his family in Austria during the international break, but admits his full focus is now on Celtic as the Jambos begin a crucial month.

Speaking to the media at the pre-match press conference, the defender said:

“I was going home to my family, to my friends, to Austria. It was nice to see them again because it was a long time without them. I didn't think too much about this. Now the focus is on the Celtic game.

“I think everybody here helps me in every kind of situation. If it's my team-mates or the coaches, everybody is so helpful.

“I'm looking forward to this game. We also have our own game plan. We're going there as every game, to win this game. We'll try our best, we'll do our best and then we'll see.

On the different challenges Scottish football poses, he continued: “It is a change. But I had a talk with the coach when I came here, how he wants me to play the games.

“I think I do an okay job here. I think everybody is satisfied. But there is still a lot of work to do for me. It was a little bit funny because one of my best friends texted me. In my previous matches I had four balls on my head. Now I have like 14. A little bit more balls on the head. I adapt to that. I'm trying to do my best, as I said.”
